“I have proved my case hundreds of times to my pupils and patients, but those who hate to see the old order cast aside, refuse to acknowledge the benefits of my system.” -Joseph H. Pilates
What is Pilates?

Pilates is exercise.

Pilates is corrective exercise.

The Pilates Contrology method is a system of rigorous exercise as well as therapeutic movement. It was developed over a span of 70 plus years by German born boxer, athlete, and physical therapy pioneer, Joseph H. Pilates. Utilizing the specialized equipment he designed, and his floor exercises, the method works by toning muscles as well as balancing muscular force at the joint level. It stimulates circulation through facilitating muscular flexibility, joint range of motion and proper musculoskeletal alignment. In addition, it promotes new neuromuscular patterns, heightened body awareness, and more precise coordination. All these things combine to help enhance athletic performance, prevent injury, and reduce - even in some cases alleviate - chronic discomfort altogether.

Pilates Contrology truly works the body form the inside out. It works the body “flip-flopped” from traditional sports fitness. For example, typically in a gym one may start to work the biceps, triceps, chest, shoulders, upper back, lower quadriceps and lower leg. (This is not bad by the way, movement and exercise for the body is good.) However, in Pilates we refer to those as peripheral muscles; muscles outside of the center of the body. The Pilates method starts from the center deep muscles (core or power-house) of the body. Once that is strong, supple, and can be controlled the peripheral muscles are then worked along with the center of the body. All clients, from athletes to those with special needs, find that when the core of the body is strong the peripheral muscles automatically get stronger since now those muscles have a strong foundation to work off of.

As both a fitness program and a rehabilitation program Pilates is a wonderful complement to physical therapy, chiropractic, massage therapy and many other therapeutic or physical fitness systems.
